Exclusive: AJ McLean & Kelly Rowland Recall Liam Payne’s Final Moments
Liam Payne Remembered as a Bright Light in the Music World
AJ McLean and Kelly Rowland of “Building the Band” fondly recall Liam Payne as a shining presence both in the music industry and beyond. The Netflix singing competition was the last project Payne participated in before his tragic passing in October 2024 at age 31.
During a virtual press event, Rowland shared that Payne had an exceptional intuition, often sensing what was about to happen in a situation. She reflected on his ability to “feel” what was coming next, emphasizing his perceptiveness and sensitivity.
Payne served as a judge alongside Kelly Rowland, of Destiny’s Child fame, and Nicole Scherzinger, the former Pussycat Dolls lead. Rowland recalled Payne’s humorous side, mentioning how he would often lean over to her between takes, sharing hilarious one-liners. Both she and McLean expressed sadness over his absence, noting his warm, witty personality and the positive energy he brought to everyone around him.
Backstreet Boys member AJ McLean described Payne as someone who could light up any room and cherished deep conversations about music, life, and their shared experiences in the industry. The series also launched the boy band Soulidified, which Payne saw himself in and encouraged to cherish their time together, highlighting his caring nature and positive spirit.
Members of the groups 3Quency and Soulidified also paid tribute, remembering Payne as sweet, supportive, and full of wisdom. They emphasized that he was willing to mentor others, demonstrating genuine kindness and compassion.
Payne, who rose to fame after winning “The X Factor” in 2010 with One Direction, often warned new groups about the challenges of fame, calling it “the calm before the storm.” His sudden death, after falling from a hotel balcony in Argentina — leaving behind a young son — has deeply saddened fans and colleagues alike. Despite his passing, his legacy of warmth, humor, and talent continues to inspire.
