DC House Panel Approves Renaming Opera House After Melania Trump

House Moves to Rename Kennedy Center’s Opera House After Melania Trump

The House of Representatives has taken a subtle step toward renaming the Kennedy Center’s famous opera house in honor of former First Lady Melania Trump. This effort was introduced quietly through an amendment attached to a government funding bill that recently passed the House Appropriations Committee.

Representative Mike Simpson (R-Idaho) supported the measure, emphasizing its significance in recognizing Melania Trump’s support for the arts. He stated, “Naming the Opera House after her reflects her appreciation for arts and humanities,” adding, “It’s a tribute to her dedication and support.”

The amendment, which has received approval from the Appropriations panel by a vote of 33-25, was supported by some Democrats, including Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (D-Wash.). The Kennedy Center’s opera house, which opened in 1971 and seats 2,347 spectators, serves as the home for the Washington National Opera and hosts the annual Kennedy Center Honors.

Earlier this year, President Trump declared himself chairman of the Kennedy Center and took steps to reorganize its Board of Trustees. He publicly criticized the center for featuring drag shows targeting youth and emphasized the need for the center to reflect the nation’s brightest stars.

Last month, President Trump and Melania attended a performance of “Les Misérables,” featuring the song “Can You Hear The People Sing,” often sung at Trump’s rallies. This visit further highlighted the connection between Trump and the arts scene at the Kennedy Center.

The legislative effort to name the opera house after Melania Trump is part of a broader series of Republican initiatives to honor the former president, including proposals to feature him on Mount Rushmore, put his face on currency, and recognize his birthday as a national holiday.
