Tiger Woods on Jack Nicklaus: Who’s the GOAT?
Legendary golfers Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus remain influential despite limited recent appearances
Jack Nicklaus, who has long since retired, and Tiger Woods, who has faced significant injuries in recent years, continue to hold a prominent place in golf’s history. Nicklaus suggested Woods use a golf cart to aid his recovery, but Woods chose to continue playing without it. Though Woods participated in the inaugural TGL tournament this season, he has yet to schedule a 2025 PGA Tour event. Both are celebrated icons, yet debates persist over who is the greatest golfer of all time.

What Tiger Woods Once Said About Jack Nicklaus as the Greatest Golfer
Nicklaus leads the record books with 18 major championship wins, compared to Woods’ 15. During an interview in 2016, journalist Charlie Rose asked Woods how to measure the greatest golfer of all time. Woods reflected on the difficulty of comparing different generations, noting, “We never got a lot of chances to play against each other, except in 2000. But I believe I could match my skills against Jack any day, and I am sure he’d feel the same way.”
Woods’ Perspective on Achieving 18 Majors
When asked if he thinks he will reach Nicklaus’s record, Woods candidly replied, “To be honest with you, no,” though he added, “I have accepted that I am going to get more.” Despite this, Woods won a major at The Masters in 2019, showcasing his enduring competitive spirit. In that memorable victory, he edged out Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, and Xander Schauffele by one shot. Koepka expressed admiration for Woods’ triumph, as it marked Woods’ fifth green jacket at Augusta National, just one behind Nicklaus’ record.
