Rep. Andrew Garbarino to Lead House Homeland Security Committee

Long Island Congressman to Lead House Homeland Security Committee

Representative Andrew Garbarino, a Republican from Long Island, is poised to become the new chair of the House Homeland Security Committee. He secured the position after winning a committee vote against fellow Republicans Michael Guest, Carlos Giménez, and Clay Higgins. The committee oversees vital domestic security matters, including border security, counterterrorism, cybersecurity, and national defense.

Garbarino emphasized his commitment to these issues, referencing his background rooted in New York City’s experiences, especially the aftermath of 9/11. He stated, “Secure borders, combat terrorism, strengthen cybersecurity, and fortify our defenses are essential to safeguarding Americans,” highlighting the serious work ahead.

He will succeed Mark Green, who resigned earlier this month to pursue a new, mysterious job potentially involving business interests in Guyana. Green’s departure followed headlines about personal controversies, including allegations from his wife about infidelity, which he later refuted.

Garbarino, first elected in 2020, previously made headlines for sleeping through a lengthy House debate on a major bill in May. He has also served as chairman of the Subcommittee on Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Protection since 2023 and notably managed impeachment proceedings against then-DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, who was ultimately not removed from office.

The selection now moves to the House Republican Conference, which typically approves the committee chair recommendations from the House Steering Committee, the body responsible for assigning lawmakers to various panels.
