Mother of Slain Intern Surprised by Trump’s Letter
Mother Receives Personal Letter from President Trump Following Son’s Tragic Death
The mother of Eric Tarpinian-Jachym, a 21-year-old congressional intern who was fatally shot last month in Washington, D.C., has expressed her heartfelt appreciation after receiving an unexpected note from the former president. Tamara Tarpinian-Jachym shared that the letter from Donald Trump brought her comfort during a difficult time, highlighting his kindness towards young people.
Eric, a rising senior at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, was among three victims shot on June 30, near the White House, when multiple suspects opened fire from a vehicle. Although he was not the intended target, he was found unconscious and succumbed to his injuries the next day. He was interning for Rep. Ron Estes at the time of his death.
In a personal letter dated July 17, Trump expressed his and Melania Trump’s sadness over the incident, describing Eric as someone remembered for his kindness and dedication. The letter stated:
“While we may never fully understand the impact that Eric has had during his meaningful life, we know he will be remembered for his kindness, faithfulness, and devotion to his family and friends. He also served his country with pride. Congressman Estes was extremely proud to have Eric represent his office and the Kansas community.”
Trump further wrote that Eric “will be held in my heart,” promising that his administration would continue efforts to improve public safety. The president concluded by wishing Eric eternal peace and strength for his family, including his siblings, Angela and Jeremy.
The letter was publicly read during Eric’s funeral and has been part of an outpouring of support from local politicians and community members. Tamara Tarpinian-Jachym noted that she also heard from several Massachusetts Democrats, including Governor Maura Healey, who reached out to her on Saturday. She remarked:
“The people in Massachusetts showed their true colors.”
As of now, DC police have not arrested a suspect in connection with Eric’s death.
