Madeline Soto’s Killer, Stephan Sterns, Gets 21 Life Sentences
Convicted Killer of 13-Year-Old Madeline Soto Sentenced to Multiple Life Terms
Stephan Sterns, the man responsible for the rape and murder of 13-year-old Madeline Soto, has received 21 consecutive life sentences in a deal that spares him from the death penalty.
Sterns, who was the longtime boyfriend of Madeline’s mother, pleaded guilty to 20 counts of sexual abuse and no contest to her murder during a court hearing. The plea was entered just before his trial was set to begin, and prosecutors agreed to drop the death penalty in exchange for his cooperation.
The remains of Madeline, who disappeared after failing to attend school a day after her 13th birthday, were discovered six days later in a wooded area. An autopsy confirmed she had been strangled. Evidence found on Sterns’s phone revealed explicit images and videos of Madeline, which had been attempted to be deleted.
Investigations revealed Sterns had been abusing Madeline since she was 11 years old. He was arrested after disturbing media surfaced and forensic examination uncovered material of a sexual nature. It was later confirmed that the abuse spanned from 2022 until her death.
Family Reaction
Madeline’s father, Tyler Wallace, expressed his anguish in court, tearfully condemning Sterns’s actions. “I can’t grasp the selfishness of you, the deplorability of your actions,” he said. “You’re depraved, weak, and a coward. Nothing heals with time.”
While Sterns initially pleaded not guilty, his change to a no contest plea spared him from detailing the crime publicly during a trial. He waived his right to appeal, ensuring he would remain incarcerated for life.
Justice Served
State attorney Monique Worrell stated, “While nothing can bring Madeline back, I hope her family finds some peace knowing justice has been served.” She emphasized that Sterns’s sentence ensures he will never walk free again, and his decision to waive appeals prevents the family from reliving the trauma in court.
