House Speaker Mike Johnson Reverses Position on Jeffrey Epstein Files Release
House Speaker Mike Johnson has shifted his stance on releasing files related to Jeffrey Epstein, opting not to pursue a congressional vote on the matter. Just days earlier, Johnson had expressed support for transparency, suggesting that such information should be disclosed for public review. However, during a recent press conference, he cited the need to respect the administration’s ongoing investigations and indicated that further congressional action may be considered if necessary.
Johnson’s change of tone may be influenced by his longstanding ties to the New Apostolic Reformation (NAR), a charismatic evangelical movement advocating Christian dominion over societal institutions, including government. He has publicly acknowledged NAR’s significant influence on his beliefs. Notably, NAR leader Lance Wallnau has publicly defended Trump’s decision to withhold Epstein’s files, suggesting Trump’s silence is in the country’s best interest. Wallnau, who has cultivated close connections with prominent GOP figures, is known for promoting conspiracy theories and making provocative statements about political opponents.
Similarly, Texas pastor Joel Webbon, affiliated with a different Christian nationalist group called the TheoBros, has voiced support for Trump regarding the Epstein files. Webbon hosts a popular YouTube show, where recent episodes have featured conspiracy theories alleging Epstein was a foreign agent working with Israeli intelligence to blackmail politicians, including Trump. Webbon has also expressed antisemitic views, criticizing Judaism while claiming to love Jews and calling Judaism a parasitic religion.
While some evangelicals advocate for transparency, others, like Webbon, promote conspiracy theories and have expressed anti-Jewish sentiments. Conversely, some Christian leaders, such as Christianity Today editor Russell Moore, argue that releasing Epstein’s files is vital for justice and restoring public trust in institutions.
