Brandel Chamblee Picks the Better Golfer: Scheffler or McIlroy, Using Tiger Woods as Benchmark
Brandel Chamblee Shares Honest Opinion on Top Golfers Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy

Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy have been standout players on the PGA Tour this year, both aiming for more success at The Open Championship, which takes place at Royal Portrush this week. After strong performances at the Scottish Open—McIlroy finishing second and Scheffler eighth—they carry momentum into the season’s final major. Both have secured three Tour wins this year, each claiming a major title—McIlroy with The Masters and Scheffler with the PGA Championship.
Chamblee Ranks Scheffler as the Better Golfer
Golf analyst Brandel Chamblee compared the two, citing the exceptional strokes gained approach of Scheffler, drawing a comparison to Tiger Woods. On “The Smylie Show,” Chamblee praised Scheffler’s performance, noting that he has elevated his game in recent years, making him one of the greatest players ever in his view.
“Scottie’s approach has been Tiger-like for three years,” Chamblee said. “He’s exceeded expectations, surpassing even greats like Morikawa and Zalatoris in that aspect. He’s just taken his game to another level, and it’s clear he could be one of the all-time greats.”
He further emphasized Scheffler’s dominance, stating that while Tiger remains the greatest overall player, Scheffler outperforms other top contenders like Rory in consistency. Chamblee mentioned that Scheffler’s injury-proof physiology and stable game make his dominance sustainable over the long term, unlike other players who faced various disruptions.
The Battle for World Number One
Despite identical records this season, Scheffler leads Rory McIlroy in the world rankings. He ranks first, with McIlroy following. Their impressive season is highlighted by Scheffler’s top rankings in strokes gained categories—tee-to-green, off-the-tee, and approach greens—all aided by his remarkable season, despite a delayed start due to hand surgery.
