AOC Faces Backlash from Democratic Socialists Over Divisive Vote

Controversy Over US Funding for Israel’s Iron Dome

Progressive critic Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez faced backlash from her left wing after voting to oppose an amendment that would have halted $500 million in defense aid to Israel’s missile defense system, the Iron Dome.

The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) condemned her for voting against the amendment, which was introduced by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene. They pointed out that while Ocasio-Cortez voted against the broader defense bill, she still supported military aid to Israel, which they associate with ongoing violence.

Ocasio-Cortez has voted against defense bills before, including in 2021 when she expressed emotional distress after voting “present” on Israel’s Iron Dome

The DSA criticized her further, citing that Israel’s missile defense systems—including the Iron Dome—have encouraged military actions in multiple countries over the past two years. They urged her to continue rejecting such aid, whether included in larger bills or as standalone legislation.

Following the vote, Ocasio-Cortez explained on social media that the amendment did not address stopping offensive aid to Israel, but instead would cut off defensive capabilities like the Iron Dome. She emphasized her focus on preventing US munitions from fueling violence in Gaza and condemned the ongoing conflict.

This disagreement reflects deep divisions within the Democratic Party concerning US support for Israel. Ocasio-Cortez’s stance continues to draw criticism from progressive allies, highlighting ongoing debates over foreign policy and military aid.
