Survivor of D-Day, TikTok Star “Papa Jake,” Passes Away at 102

″Papa Jake″ Larson, a World War II veteran who fought on Omaha Beach during the Normandy invasion and later gained fame on TikTok sharing stories of his wartime experiences, has died at the age of 102.

A lively talker known for his quick smile and warm hugs, Larson was born in Minnesota and enlisted in the National Guard at just 15, lying about his age. He was deployed overseas in 1942, serving in Northern Ireland and eventually helping plan the Normandy landings as an operations sergeant.

He was among the approximately 160,000 Allied troops who stormed Omaha Beach on D-Day, July 6, 1944. Surviving gunfire as he landed, Larson reached the bluffs, which were protected by German defenses. Reflecting on that moment, he said, “We are the lucky ones,” emphasizing the responsibility to honor fallen soldiers who gave their lives for freedom.

Larson also participated in the Battle of the Bulge, earning a Bronze Star and a French Legion of Honor. In later years, he traveled regularly to Normandy for commemorations, becoming a beloved figure among visitors and veterans alike. His encounters often involved hugs and heartfelt conversations, such as a touching exchange in 2023 with British WWII veteran Bill Gladden, who survived a glider landing and headshot on D-Day.

Despite his fame, Larson remained humble, often referring to himself as “the luckiest man in the world” and emphasizing that his TikTok success was unplanned. His service and storytelling have left a lasting legacy, inspiring people across generations to remember the sacrifices made during one of history’s pivotal moments.
