Construction Accident Reveals Unexpected Brick Wall Exposure

A resident of Brooklyn experienced a startling disruption when construction crews accidentally broke through his living room wall, creating a large hole in his apartment. The incident occurred early Monday morning as Jamie, a Bushwick resident, was preparing for a virtual onboarding meeting for a new job.

Jamie noticed debris and daylight spilling into his space, realizing part of his exposed brick wall had collapsed. “I looked at the wall and saw daylight,” he recounted, describing the scene as covered in bricks and dust. The damage was linked to ongoing demolitions in a neighboring parking lot, with machinery hitting the wall of his unit on Himrod Street.

According to Jamie, the machinery involved in the demolition swung too forcefully, causing the damage. The construction company responsible, N Tech Design of America, did not respond to requests for comment. Workers suggested that the neighboring old structure was somehow “attached” to his apartment, contributing to the damage.

Initially, Jamie’s landlord appeared unbothered, even joking about the situation. However, their lawyer advised them to take the matter seriously, warning of potential further collapse or damage.

Emergency services arrived, and inspections confirmed that a two-foot by two-foot section of brickwork had been dislodged by impact from the demolition site. The Department of Buildings issued a stop-work order and filed violations for failure to secure the site and report the incident.

While the site remained halted, Jamie, his girlfriend, and their cat had to find temporary accommodation, opting for a pet-friendly hotel. Despite the disruption, he managed to move back into his apartment as repairs continued, though the experience left him feeling anxious about the potential future impacts of the construction activities.

Jamie hopes the company will cover the costs of interim lodging, but details remain unclear. He also shared that his cat seems especially traumatized by the upheaval, adding a personal note to the chaos.
