NY Pols Urged to Address Immigration After CBP Agent Shooting
Night of Violence Highlights Flaws in Progressive Immigration and Crime Policies
A recent shooting involving an off-duty customs officer underscores significant issues stemming from lax immigration policies, sanctuary city laws, and criminal justice reforms. The incident occurred when the 42-year-old Customs and Border Protection officer was ambushed in a park while sitting with a friend. Two armed suspects approached on a moped intending to rob them. Despite being shot in the face, the officer returned fire and wounded one attacker.
Both suspects—Miguel Mora and Christhian Aybar-Berroa—were identified as illegal immigrants who had entered the U.S. during the border surge. Mora, aged 21, has an extensive arrest record for violent crimes and had a deportation order pending. Aybar-Berroa also has a criminal history and an order of removal to the Dominican Republic.
Surprisingly, both men had been allowed into the country, with border officials initially stopping them but then releasing them, a routine that persisted under policies enacted during the Biden administration. President Biden began his term by pausing deportations for 100 days, leading to millions crossing the border unchecked. New York State’s progressive policies further enabled these individuals to remain and operate freely within the city. Laws banning cooperation with federal immigration authorities, such as ICE, and the removal of ICE from facilities like Rikers Island, have turned New York into a safe haven for illegal migrants with criminal intent.
Local leadership has often shown leniency: lawmakers have crafted laws to minimize immigration consequences for illegal migrants, and police officials are discouraged from cooperating with federal agencies. Efforts by the federal government, including remarks from Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem criticizing the city’s sanctuary laws, highlight the ongoing tension and the dangerous environment created by these policies.
While President Trump previously took steps to secure borders and deport violent offenders, progressive forces have resisted these measures, arguably at the expense of public safety. This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of ineffective policies and the urgent need for a change to ensure community safety.
