UK Cartoonist Creates Hand-Drawn Map of New York City with Help from Locals

Inspired by a lifelong fascination with New York City, UK-based cartoonist Daniel Ryder, known as “Angry Dan,” is working on a project to chart the city’s most iconic spots through detailed, hand-drawn cartoons. He has been actively engaging with New Yorkers, asking them to share their favorite eateries, cultural sites, and scenic views to include in his maps.

Ryder has spent recent days exploring the city, distributing contact cards, and collecting suggestions from locals. His goal is to produce a vibrant map that captures the essence of New York, making both residents and visitors appreciate its unique neighborhoods and landmarks.

Ryder’s maps are described as “wiggly-windy jigsaw puzzles,” where the charming visual style highlights the city’s vibrant neighborhoods. His passion for drawing was rekindled in his 30s after childhood setbacks due to colorblindness. His first completed map was of London, a labor intensive project that took thousands of hours, with community input shaping the final product.

He believes his NYC map will serve as a reminder of the city’s wonder, appealing to both adults and children. Ryder recalls an early night in Midtown, where a casual conversation about local dining spots exemplified the city’s lively community spirit and diverse culture.

Though representing Manhattan’s density posed challenges, Ryder’s artistic vision remains undeterred.
