NYC Mayoral Candidate Zohran Mamdani Visits Uganda to Celebrate Wedding

Zohran Mamdani, a Democratic candidate for New York City mayor and a socialist politician, has returned briefly to Uganda, his country of birth, to celebrate his marriage. The 33-year-old shared his plans via a video message addressing online critics, balancing humor with his personal news.

In the video, Mamdani acknowledged the criticism he received on social media and jokingly promised to return to Uganda, explaining that he is there to celebrate his marriage to artist and animator Rama Duwaji. The couple tied the knot in February, as Mamdani announced in a May post.

He added humorously that he was taking the trolls’ advice to “go back to Africa,” and confirmed he would be back in New York before month’s end to resume his campaign efforts. Mamdani’s campaign issued a statement clarifying that the trip is a personal visit and that he intends to return to continue working towards making New York City more affordable.
