Mamdani Wins Over Critics with Delightful Video
New York Mayoral Candidate Zohran Mamdani Responds to Critics with a Humorous Trip to Uganda
Following his historic victory in the Democratic primary for New York City mayor, democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani announced a brief trip to Uganda to celebrate his February wedding with family and friends. Mamdani, who was born in Uganda and lived there until age seven before moving to the U.S., chose to highlight his heritage amid ongoing racialized attacks calling for him to “go back” to Africa.
In a social media video, Mamdani drew on those racist comments by playing on headlines like “UGANDA MISS ME” and “HE AFRI-CAN’T BE SERIOUS,” using humor to deflect criticism and connect with voters. His campaign’s authentic social media approach has been praised as crucial to his success, contrasting with opponents like Andrew Cuomo and Eric Adams, who have criticized Mamdani’s online strategy.
This trip also responded to a controversial 2009 college application from Mamdani, in which he identified as both African-American and Asian. The information was leaked by a right-wing source previously known for racist and offensive comments, adding political tension to Mamdani’s rise.
Since his victory, Mamdani has actively engaged with influential figures, including securing an endorsement from a local healthcare union that previously supported Cuomo. Notably, Cuomo jokingly said he would move to Florida if Mamdani wins the mayoral race, highlighting the intense public and political attention surrounding his campaign.
