Wrexham Break Club Transfer Record as They Aim for Fourth Promotion to the Premier League
Wrexham has set a new club transfer record with the signing of defender Liberato Cacace as they prepare to climb back to the Championship.
The Welsh team is striving for an extraordinary fourth consecutive promotion and hopes to achieve a spot in the Premier League for the first time in its history.
Since being taken over in 2021 by actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, Wrexham has rapidly advanced through the English football tiers. After winning promotion from League One last season, they now find themselves in with a chance to reach the top division, having not played there in over four decades.
The club recently finalized the transfer of Cacace, a 24-year-old New Zealand international, from Empoli in Italy, on a three-year contract. The deal was worth an initial £2.16 million, with the potential to rise to £4 million.

The New Zealand international signed a three-year deal worth an initial £2.16 million.
This fee exceeds their previous record signing, Sam Smith, who joined in January for £2 million.
Cacace, who earned 33 caps for New Zealand, expressed his excitement, saying he was “absolutely delighted” to sign for the historic club and eager to begin. He admired the club’s close-knit family atmosphere and the vision the management team presented during his discussions.
Manager Phil Parkinson welcomed Cacace, emphasizing his character and fit within Wrexham’s culture. The club had been monitoring him for some time, and he is expected to compete with key defenders for a starting role.
Wrexham’s ambitions are bolstered by strengthening their squad with other recent signings, including goalkeeper Danny Ward and forward Ryan Hardie. Though linked with high-profile players like Jamie Vardy and Tom Cairney, their focus remains on building a solid team.
Meanwhile, prolific scorer Paul Mullin, who netted 110 goals in 170 appearances, has been loaned out to Wigan Athletic for this season. The club’s rapid rise and strategic signings mark an exciting period for Wrexham as they aim for their ultimate goal: a place in the Premier League.
