Matheus Cunha Debuts for Man United in First Start After £62.5m Transfer
Matheus Cunha Debuts as Manchester United’s New £62.5 Million Forward in Pre-Season Line-Up
Matheus Cunha has made his first start for Manchester United following his recent transfer from Wolverhampton Wanderers for £62.5 million. The debut came during a pre-season friendly against Leeds in Stockholm, as new manager Ruben Amorim fielded a strong team featuring eight senior players to kick off preparations for the upcoming season.
Cunha, who joins United this summer, was given a starting role, alongside Diego Leon, who arrived from Cerro Porteno for £7 million and played at left wing-back. United’s captain Bruno Fernandes also started the match, despite turning down a lucrative £200 million offer from Saudi side Al-Hilal.
The team also included young talents Chido Obi and Toby Collyer, highlighting the club’s focus on integrating youth into the squad. This fixture marks the beginning of United’s pre-season tour, which will continue in the United States next week with matches against West Ham, Bournemouth, and Everton as part of the Premier League Summer Series.
Additionally, Bryan Mbeumo is expected to join the squad after Brentford accepted a bid of £71 million for the Cameroon forward. Manchester United agreed to pay an initial £65 million plus £6 million in add-ons after two previous bids of £55 million and £62.5 million were unsuccessful. The move concludes a long-running transfer saga in the summer window.
While plans are underway to sign a new centre-forward, Manchester United may need to sell players before making further acquisitions. Currently, Rashford, Garnacho, Sancho, Antony, and Malacia are available for selection, though the club is open to offers for Rasmus Hojlund.
Overall, United is focusing on building a competitive squad ahead of the new season, with strategic signings and youth integration at the forefront.
