California Woman Fakes ICE Kidnapping to Scam Funds and Smear Federal Agents

Mother Behind Fake Kidnapping Hoax Faces Federal Charges

An immigrant mother was accused of orchestrating a false kidnapping scheme at a fast-food joint, aiming to generate sympathy and solicit donations. Yuriana Julia “Juli” Pelaez Calderon, 41, was charged with conspiracy and making false statements to federal authorities.

The deception began when her family and attorneys claimed armed men ambushed Calderon at a Los Angeles restaurant parking lot, took her to San Ysidro, and presented her with self-deportation paperwork. Calderon allegedly refused to sign and demanded legal counsel, after which her family asserted she was detained in a warehouse. Her supporters quickly launched a GoFundMe, raising $4,500 with a description falsely claiming Calderon had been kidnapped.

Surveillance footage later revealed Calderon leaving the scene in a vehicle, contradicting her family’s story. Phone records and further investigation showed she was never actually detained or kidnapped. Calderon was found in Bakersfield and continued insisting she was held “with others,” but authorities confirmed she was never in custody.

The Department of Homeland Security strongly denied the kidnapping allegations, criticizing politicians and media who perpetuated the false narrative. They emphasized Calderon’s actions misused resources meant for genuine cases and sought to damage law enforcement’s reputation.

The investigation revealed Calderon’s story was fabricated, and her family’s plans to hold further fundraising events were thwarted. The DHS stated Calderon faces up to five years in prison if convicted, and additional accomplices could also be charged. The agency condemned the misuse of public and federal resources and called out politicians and media outlets for spreading the falsehoods.
