Why Marko Arnautovic Didn’t Join Man United in 2022 Despite Agreement

What Stopped Marko Arnautovic from Moving to Manchester United in 2022 Despite Agreement

In 2022, Marko Arnautovic was very close to transferring to Manchester United, with reports indicating the clubs had nearly finalized an agreement. However, the deal ultimately fell through, as Bologna, the club he was playing for at the time, refused to release him.

The Austrian striker, now aged 36, had previously had successful spells at Stoke City and West Ham, making his move to England well-known among fans. After a stint in China with Shanghai SIPG, Arnautovic returned to Europe with Bologna, which caught the attention of Manchester United’s new manager, Erik ten Hag, who was looking to bolster his attack.

United viewed Arnautovic as an affordable option, making an initial bid of £7.5 million that was rejected by Bologna. The club’s demands remained high, and despite reaching an agreement to sign him, Bologna’s refusal prevented the transfer from proceeding. According to Arnautovic’s brother, who also acts as his agent, Bologna was not willing to let him leave at that time.

Instead of moving to Manchester United, Arnautovic stayed put and later joined Inter Milan in 2023, initially on loan, before making the transfer permanent. He contributed to their impressive run to the Champions League final this season.

Nowadays, Arnautovic is a free agent with the upcoming season approaching. He is eager to find a new club and is expected to participate in the next World Cup if Austria qualifies, with the team currently unbeaten in their qualifying matches under former United boss Ralf Rangnick.
