Severe Flash Flooding Hits Ruidoso, New Mexico

A sudden and intense thunderstorm brought heavy rains to the Ruidoso area, resulting in over 3 inches of water falling on the already fragile landscape, which had been scarred by recent wildfires.

The rainfall caused the burned and hydrophobic soil to repel water, turning hillside slopes into dangerous torrents. The Rio Ruidoso river surged dramatically, rising over 20 feet—far beyond its flood stage—and transforming into a destructive force that carried debris, mud, and logs downstream.

Floodwaters swept through neighborhoods, inundating homes, destroying structures, and blocking roads. Emergency responders in vehicles and helicopters performed multiple rescues, including rescuing residents trapped in submerged vehicles and buildings. A reported incident involved a father and two children being carried away by rising waters.

Several streets, including White Mountain Road and Cedar Creek, were sealed off due to flooding. Emergency shelters opened at local centers to accommodate displaced residents. Nearby communities like Ruidoso Downs and Gleno also experienced overflow, with creeks flooding residential areas.

The expedited rise of the river from just over 1 foot to more than 20 feet in less than an hour was confirmed by USGS measurements, suggesting a likely record-breaking event for the river.

Authorities issued warnings to avoid floodwaters and to refrain from attempting to cross streaming waters, which pose deadly risks. Several injuries were reported, and some residents were hospitalized. The terrain’s vulnerability was worsened by residual effects of recent wildfires, which left the land less capable of absorbing water.

Many flood mitigation projects remain unfinished due to delays and lack of funding, heightening fears of further damage with ongoing monsoon conditions.
