Severe Flash Flooding Strikes Ruidoso, New Mexico

A sudden and powerful thunderstorm caused devastating flash floods in the Ruidoso area of New Mexico, dropping over three inches of rain on fragile terrain already scarred by previous wildfires. The burned soil, which tends to repel water, failed to absorb the runoff, transforming hillsides into rushing torrents.

The heavy rains rapidly raised the Rio Ruidoso river by more than 20 feet in less than an hour, far exceeding its usual flood stage. The swift rise caused widespread destruction, sweeping away homes, trailers, and parts of roads, with debris, mud, logs, and rocks clogging streets and making travel impossible.

Multiple neighborhoods experienced severe flooding, with streets like White Mountain Road, Paradise Canyon, and Cedar Creek quickly becoming impassable. Emergency shelters opened at various locations, including the Ruidoso Community Center and Eastern New Mexico University, to accommodate trapped residents.

Creeks overflowed in nearby communities such as Ruidoso Downs and Gleno, submerging homes and stranded vehicles. Emergency rescues, including helicopter operations, worked tirelessly to reach residents in peril. In one tragic incident, reports indicated a father and two children were carried away by the rising waters.

USGS gauges confirmed that the river’s spike was a potential record-breaking event. Authorities issued immediate warnings urging residents to seek higher ground and avoid floodwaters, emphasizing the life-threatening danger of trying to cross moving streams. Persistent heavy rain and fire scars from 2024 worsened the vulnerability of the area, clogging waterways and reducing their capacity for runoff management.

Officials reported that several individuals sustained injuries requiring hospitalization, while damage assessments were still underway. Many mitigation projects remain unfunded and incomplete, raising concerns about the potential for additional flooding as the monsoon season continues.

Governor’s office and local leaders called for quick evacuations due to the unpredictable paths and severity of the storms. Power outages affected large parts of Lincoln County, with emergency generators deployed at shelters and critical facilities. Residents were advised to stay prepared, utilizing sandbag stations and updated evacuation plans to avoid future disaster.
