Crystal Palace to Challenge UEFA Over Alleged Double Standards Against Nottingham Forest

Crystal Palace Seeks Transparency in UEFA Communications Amid Demotion Dispute

Crystal Palace is demanding full access to emails and text messages between UEFA and Nottingham Forest, believing these documents could reveal inconsistencies in how UEFA handled their respective cases. The club alleges that correspondence shows Forest was granted extra time to meet UEFA’s multi-club ownership rules, unlike Palace, which was demoted from the Europa League to the Europa Conference League after failing to resolve ownership issues involving John Textor and Lyon by March 1.

Palace intends to appeal UEFA’s decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport and is requesting the disclosure of relevant communications. They suspect that Forest also lobbied UEFA to expect Palace’s demotion, and they have evidence that UEFA may have provided Forest with a different timeline than they received.

Recently, a communication from the European Club Association (ECA) indicated that the March 1 deadline was not strict, allowing clubs until May 31 to address ownership issues. Palace claims they only received generic emails, while Forest and Olympiakos, owned by Evangelos Marinakis, had different guidelines to follow. The club highlights that Lyon, owned by Textor, was affected by these rules but finished higher in their league, occupying a Europa League spot—adding complexity to the situation.

Palace’s ownership changes also played a role. Textor sold his shares in Palace to Woody Johnson; meanwhile, Marinakis adjusted his control of Forest when European qualification seemed possible, potentially influencing UEFA’s decisions. Fans have protested Palace’s relegation, calling UEFA’s ruling unjust and criticizing its moral stance.

Palace’s leadership remains hopeful that relationships with UEFA officials and support from the FA and some political figures might influence their case. The club is also considering legal options, with the draw for the Conference League play-offs scheduled for August 4.
