17-Year-Old Arrested in Maine Paddleboarder Sunshine Stewart’s Killing

Maine Teen Detained in Paddleboarder Murder Case

A 17-year-old boy from Maine has been taken into custody in connection with the killing of Sunshine “Sunny” Stewart, a 48-year-old paddleboarder whose body was discovered earlier this month. Stewart was found under unusual circumstances on an island in Crawford Pond, Union, on July 3, after a solo paddleboarding trip she took the previous day.

Authorities revealed that Stewart died from strangulation and blunt force injuries, as confirmed by the Maine medical examiner. The incident occurred near the Mic Mac Family Campground, where she had been renting a campsite for the summer. She had only been staying at the campground for a few nights before her death.

The suspect, whose identity has not been made public, was arrested without incident on Wednesday. He is a local resident who reportedly vacations annually with his family in the Crawford Pond area. A friend of Stewart expressed her mixture of joy and sorrow upon the arrest, stating, “I am floored with elation and grief.”

The juvenile suspect was subsequently transported to the Long Creek Youth Development Center in South Portland. The investigation continues as authorities seek further details about the case. Stewart’s death has left the small community in shock, raising questions about safety in the area.

This tragic incident highlights the dangers that can accompany outdoor recreational activities, prompting ongoing discussions about safety measures and law enforcement responses in rural communities.
