Trump’s Russia Sanctions Deadline Wastes Time and Lives: Zelensky

Ukraine’s Zelensky Urges Faster Sanctions to End War

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has stated that Russian President Vladimir Putin is unwilling to compromise to bring the ongoing conflict to an end. He believes Putin’s refusal to make concessions prolongs the bloodshed, which could be shortened with increased pressure from the West, particularly through intensified sanctions.

Zelensky expressed gratitude for recent U.S. support, notably President Trump’s vow to impose 100% tariffs on nations buying Russian oil if Moscow does not agree to peace talks. However, he emphasized that Putin’s strategy is to cause ongoing destruction, especially targeting civilian infrastructure and first responders, often with secondary drone strikes aimed at rescuers attempting to aid victims.

He highlighted the brutal tactics used, where Russian forces deliberately attack rescue vehicles and emergency workers after initial strikes, thus hindering humanitarian efforts. Zelensky criticized the slow peace negotiations, accusing Putin of wasting Trump’s time by engaging in deceptive diplomacy. He called for the U.S. Congress to intensify sanctions, believing stronger measures are crucial to compelling Putin to cease hostilities.

Zelensky remarked that Russian authorities are afraid of losing economic stability and public support if sanctions hit their wallets, possibly causing a social explosion. While many Russians oppose the war privately, fear of repercussions prevents open dissent, but the situation could change if economic pressures intensify.

Zelensky believes that pushing Russia with severe sanctions could turn the tide, especially if it results in economic hardship that diminishes Putin’s support at home. He emphasized the importance of the international community, particularly the U.S., to expedite these efforts to bring peace sooner.
