Out-of-State Donors Pour $350K into Zohran Mamdani’s NYC Mayoral Campaign
Out-of-State Donations Surge for Mayoral Candidate Zohran Mamdani
Since his unexpected victory in the Democratic primary, out-of-state donors have contributed over $350,000 to Zohran Mamdani’s campaign. Public campaign finance records show that between June 25 and July 11, Mamdani received $351,423 from 5,292 donors with no connections to New York City.
These donations accounted for nearly half of the total $816,014 raised during that period from approximately 10,300 contributors. Notably, about $10,300 came from 125 donors who are based outside New York but are employed within the city.
Following his primary win, Mamdani quickly raised around $170,000 in a single day, with $45,128 coming from donors entirely outside the city. A significant portion of the out-of-state support originated from California, where 1,153 donors contributed a total of $100,000.
Analysts attribute this national support to Mamdani’s rising prominence after defeating Andrew Cuomo in the primary, marking a significant victory for the left. Political consultant Lis Smith noted, “He’s become a leading figure on the left nationwide,” and highlighted that many donors outside New York are eager to support his progressive platform.
Mamdani advocates for policies like rent freezes on regulated apartments, expanding city-run grocery stores, and increased taxes on corporations and the wealthy. His campaign has attracted support from progressive groups and individuals associated with organizations like Oxfam America and the Strong Economy for All Coalition.
While he still faces a contested general election, Mamdani has received endorsements from figures including Bronx Rep. Adriano Espaillat and met with prominent Democrats such as Bernie Sanders. Despite ongoing challenges from moderates eager to block his campaign, Mamdani remains a leading left-wing candidate aiming for City Hall.
