Liverpool Gain Big Boost in €85m Hunt as Newcastle Drops Out for Hugo Ekitike
Newcastle Withdraws from Ekitike Transfer Battle, Boosting Liverpool’s Chances
Newcastle United has decided to end their pursuit of Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike, presenting a significant opportunity for Liverpool. The Magpies’ €80 million (£70 million) bid was rejected earlier this week, as Frankfurt held out for a fee of £86 million.
Discussions between Newcastle and Frankfurt had been ongoing, especially after Newcastle’s attempt to sign Joao Pedro from Watford, which was complicated by Chelsea’s interest. Newcastle’s efforts intensified during pre-season in Austria, but ultimately, they have chosen to abandon their bid, as the deal was deemed too expensive and would require surpassing their transfer record.
Now, Newcastle is pivoting towards other targets, including Brentford’s Yoane Wissa, in their efforts to strengthen their squad for the upcoming Champions League campaign. Their focus has shifted since their bid for Ekitike was blocked.
This development leaves Liverpool in a more favorable position, as they have reportedly entered advanced negotiations with Frankfurt over Ekitike. The French youth international, who signed a five-year contract with Frankfurt last summer after a loan from Paris Saint-Germain, is valued at around €16.5 million (£14.3 million).
Ekitike, who has scored 26 goals and provided 14 assists in 64 appearances for Frankfurt, has drawn interest from several Premier League clubs, including Chelsea and Manchester United, alongside Liverpool. Frankfurt secured third place in the Bundesliga last season, ensuring their qualification for the Champions League.
While Newcastle remains firm that Isak is not for sale, they are actively exploring attacking options, with Wissa now their primary target following a rejected £50 million bid from Nottingham Forest. Tottenham has also shown interest in the Congo forward.
Last week, Newcastle completed their first major summer signing, acquiring Anthony Elanga from Nottingham Forest for £55 million. However, they have faced challenges in bringing in additional players, despite selling Sean Longstaff to Leeds.
Meanwhile, Liverpool has enjoyed a busy transfer window, notably breaking the British record with a £116 million signing of Florian Wirtz, and bringing in Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong, and Freddie Woodman on a free transfer.
