Boehly Reacts to Chelsea’s Surreal Club World Cup Win & Premier League Ambitions
Chelsea Celebrates Club World Cup Victory
Chelsea’s owner, Todd Boehly, expressed pride in the club’s recent triumph in the Club World Cup, calling it a “special victory.” He thanked the fans for their unwavering support and highlighted that many did not believe the team could defeat Paris Saint-Germain, yet they proved otherwise. Boehly emphasized that the Blues are emerging as a formidable force ahead of the upcoming Premier League season.
The team showcased dominant performance at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, beating reigning Champions League winners PSG with a convincing 3-0 score. The goals came from Cole Palmer, who scored twice in the first half, and Joao Pedro, adding a third before halftime. This win not only crowns them as world champions but also comes with a prize of approximately £90 million, along with the privilege to display a gold “World Champions” badge on their kits for four years.
This victory marks Chelsea’s second trophy since their acquisition by Boehly and Clearlake Capital for £4.25 billion in 2022, following their success in the Europa Conference League just weeks earlier. Boehly praised the team’s effort, crediting head coach Enzo Maresca for guiding the squad to victory and noting the players’ impressive growth over the past weeks in America.
Reflecting on the tournament’s impact, Boehly called the experience “surreal” and lauded the tactical discipline and organization demonstrated by the team. He expressed excitement for the future, stating that the team has proven to be a significant contender. Chelsea players will now enjoy a three-week break before preseason begins in early August, with upcoming friendlies against Bayer Leverkusen and AC Milan.
Looking ahead, Boehly believes Chelsea’s recent success demonstrates their strength in both domestic and European competitions. Defender Levi Colwill shared his confidence, stating, “This is the biggest trophy I’ve ever won. The Club World Cup might surpass the Champions League, and we’re the first team to win it.” The Blues are set to return to the Champions League after three seasons, aiming to continue their trophy-winning streak.
