Where Is Obama? “I’m Out Here!” Watch the Exclusive Interview
What Is Barack Obama Doing Now?
Recently, there’s been renewed public interest and speculation about the activities of former President Barack Obama. An article in The Atlantic described him as having entered “the fierce lethargy of semi-retirement,” sparking a wave of discussions across media and social platforms about his role in defending democracy today. Many expect him to be more publicly active, but he seems to prefer a quieter, strategic approach.
In an exclusive interview I conducted last month, I asked Obama about these widespread calls for him to take a more visible stance. His straightforward reply was, “I’m out here!” emphasizing that he remains engaged behind the scenes.
He acknowledged the current uncertain times, contrasting them with his presidency when stability was perceived more strongly. “For a lot of people, there’s a sense that anything can happen now,” he said.
Though Obama remains largely in the background, his focus is on nurturing future leaders through the Obama Foundation. “Our goal is to train the next generation to recognize their power and influence,” he explained. Instead of despair or cynicism, he advocates for proactive engagement, inspiring younger voices to make an impact.
Recently, Obama used a fundraiser to urge Democrats to “toughen up,” criticizing what he sees as a tendency among some to back down or become intimidated. While some interpret this as a call for bolder action, it also aligns with his broader strategy: building lasting infrastructure—leadership pipelines, media influence, international alliances—that takes time but can secure long-term victories.
He has openly questioned whether democratic institutions can withstand rising autocratic threats long enough for these efforts to succeed. Nonetheless, his approach appears to be a deliberate, long-term effort. For a deeper understanding, you can watch my extended interview with Obama.
