Sarah Pidgeon Responds to Backlash Over Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy Portrayal

Actress Responds to Wardrobe Criticism in New Series

Sarah Pidgeon, who is set to star as Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy in a new FX series, recently addressed the backlash over her character’s wardrobe. Some viewers expressed disappointment, claiming her costumes appeared inexpensive and did not accurately reflect Bessette-Kennedy’s minimalist style.

Speaking at the Los Angeles premiere of “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” Pidgeon shared her thoughts on the controversy. She acknowledged the significance of the role and the responsibility that comes with portraying a beloved figure, adding, “I understand how widely loved she is, and I’m aware of the strong opinions about it.”

She reflected on the multifaceted nature of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, emphasizing her as more than just the fashion icon depicted in photographs. “She was a woman who worked at Calvin Klein and the woman JFK Jr. fell for—not just her style, but her personality,” Pidgeon said. “She resonates deeply with many, including myself.”

The actress also commented on her character’s platinum hair, which has attracted scrutiny. Former hairstylist Brad Johns criticized the show’s take, stating, “The hair looks burnt and all white, which isn’t true to Carolyn’s real hair color.” Johns explained that Carolyn’s actual hair was darker at the roots, medium blond in the middle, with bright gold highlights in the front, adding, “Gold enhances beauty, while ashy tones can make someone look lifeless—something I’d never have done.”

Series creator Ryan Murphy addressed the criticism in an interview, clarifying that the initial leaked images were rushed and did not reflect the final look. “I didn’t anticipate how much people would care about this, but it’s a good thing,” he remarked.
