Union Slams ‘Unlawful’ Education Cuts Post-Supreme Court Ruling
Supreme Court Allows President Trump to Proceed with Department of Education Employee Discharges
The Supreme Court has temporarily authorized the Trump administration to dismiss hundreds of Department of Education employees, moving forward with plans to dismantle the department. The ruling, issued with a 6-3 vote along ideological lines, halts a lower court order that had reinstated approximately 1,400 workers.
Earlier this year, Education Secretary Linda McMahon had laid off half of the department’s staff as part of broader government reductions. Subsequently, President Trump announced plans to completely shut down the department via an executive order. The recent Supreme Court decision supports these efforts by allowing the federal agency to proceed with staffing reductions, citing the need to improve efficiency and accountability.
The legal action stems from two lawsuits, including one filed by twenty Democratic-governed states that challenged the department’s layoffs and planned closure. McMahon expressed support for the ruling, stating that it allows the agency to implement workforce reductions designed to boost efficiency and return educational authority to the states.
On social media platform X, McMahon highlighted the authority vested in the President as head of the Executive Branch, emphasizing that the ruling affirms the presidential power to manage staffing, organization, and operations of federal agencies. She praised the decision as a victory for students and families, though she also noted that the Supreme Court had to intervene to enable President Trump to pursue reforms granted by the U.S. Constitution.
