NJ Residents Killed in Flash Floods
Tragic Flooding Claims Two Lives in New Jersey
During a severe overnight storm, two women lost their lives when their vehicle was overwhelmed by floodwaters in Plainfield, New Jersey. The incident occurred amidst torrential rain that caused flooding throughout the tri-state area, just 11 days after three others were killed by extreme weather conditions nearby.
The women, whose identities have not yet been released, were discovered deceased in their car after floodwaters swept it into Cedar Brook. First responders attempted to rescue them but were unsuccessful due to the intensity of the flooding.
Witnesses described the floodwaters as comparable to a fast-moving river, with one resident remarking, “It was so flooded it was like a river going through, and I’ve never seen anything like this before.”
The storm’s aftermath includes a recent tragedy where three individuals were killed by falling trees during violent storms on July 3, all residents of Plainfield and nearby North Plainfield.
Mayor Adrian O. Mapp expressed profound grief over these series of losses, stating, “All of Plainfield grieves this latest loss. Losing four residents in such a short span is unimaginable. We mourn with the families and are committed to improving emergency responses to protect our community.”
In North Plainfield, a family narrowly escaped a house fire caused by the flooding, which resulted in an explosion and destruction of their home on Parkview Avenue. The family had evacuated due to flood warnings before the blast, which occurred just before 11:30 p.m. Fire remnants and scattered debris could be seen across the street.
The cause of the house explosion remains unclear, though neighborhood reports mentioned gas concerns at the time. Meanwhile, officials had declared a state of emergency, urging residents to stay indoors and avoid travel due to dangerous weather conditions.
Gov. Phil Murphy highlighted that the current weather pattern is characterized by high humidity, temperature, and storm intensity, emphasizing the need for vigilance. Despite most flood alerts expiring, some roads remain inaccessible, and flight disruptions continue at local airports, with numerous cancellations reported.
