Tragic Flooding in Texas Claims Multiple Lives, Including Young Girl

Heavy floods in Texas have resulted in the tragic loss of at least 82 lives, including 28 children, with many victims found in the aftermath of the surge caused by the Guadalupe River, which rose up to 30 feet beyond its normal level.

Clark Hunt’s wife, Tavia, confirmed that a young family member, Janie Hunt, was among those who perished in the floods. She expressed her grief on social media, mourning the loss of her niece and highlighting the devastation caused by the disaster.

The floodwaters severely damaged the area around Camp Mystic, a Christian summer camp in Wimberly. The camp lost five campers and is still searching for 11 other girls, most of whom were staying close to the river’s banks. The camp’s director, Richard Eastland, tragically lost his life attempting to rescue others during the storm.

Prior to the disaster, videos showed the campers engaging in joyful activities, unaware of the impending danger. The youngest children and those sleeping on lower ground were particularly vulnerable, with many missing and presumed swept away by the floodwaters.

At the time of the floods, around 750 girls were staying at the camp. In response, Texas officials, including Governor Greg Abbott, have declared a day of prayer and are continuing rescue efforts. Families affected have begun providing DNA samples to assist in identifying victims.

Authorities issued multiple flood warnings as intense rainfall poured down within minutes, causing flash floods in vulnerable regions. However, criticism has grown over delayed alerts, especially in the heavily impacted Hill Country area, where some officials say warnings did not reach residents in time.

While rescue operations are ongoing, officials estimate that the death toll may surpass 100. The Texas Division of Emergency Management has indicated that the focus has shifted from rescue to recovery, with hopes that more survivors will be found alive.
