Kansas City Chiefs Owner Clark Hunt Mourns 9-Year-Old Flood Victim
Tragic Flooding in Texas Claims Multiple Lives
The recent severe floods in Texas have resulted in a tragic loss of life, including a young family member of the owner of the Kansas City Chiefs. The Guadalupe River overflowed significantly on Friday, reaching up to 30 feet above its normal level, leading to at least 82 deaths. Among the victims are 28 children, many of whom were found in or near the flood-affected areas.
One of the victims was Janie Hunt, a nine-year-old girl who died during the flooding at Camp Mystic, a private Christian summer camp in Wimberly. The camp, which was hosting around 750 girls, was struck by a sudden surge of water after an intense rainfall. Many children slept on lower ground inside the cabins, making rescue efforts more challenging. The camp’s director, Richard Dick Eastland, lost his life while trying to help the girls.
Camp officials had posted joyful videos of the children participating in activities just a week before the disaster. The majority of the missing children are younger and last seen near the river’s banks. Efforts are ongoing to locate the missing, with authorities emphasizing the importance of continuous search operations.
In response to the catastrophe, Texas Governor Greg Abbott declared Sunday a day of prayer and urged residents to join in collective mourning and recovery efforts. Relatives of the victims have traveled across the state to provide DNA samples to assist in identifying the deceased.
The weather forecast predicted heavy rainfall, prompting flood alerts hours before the disaster struck. Despite warnings, many residents and campers received delayed notifications, which hampered timely evacuations. Local officials criticized the weather service for communication failures, especially in the heavily affected Kurville region, known as flash flood alley.
According to sources, the Texas Division of Emergency Management expects the death toll to surpass 100, with rescue efforts shifting to recovery. Authorities continue to search for survivors, hoping that some individuals remain alive despite the overwhelming devastation.
