Grandfather Escapes 8,000 Miles to Graduation, Then Disappears

Missing in Alabama: The Disappearance of Reuben Waithaka

Reuben Waithaka went missing on May 15. His whereabouts remain a mystery.

Reuben Waithaka traveled from Kenya to Alabama to celebrate his grandson’s high school graduation, arriving six days early with sentimental gifts for his family. Despite plans for a joyful family reunion, Waithaka vanished suddenly the morning after his arrival, just outside his son’s home in Calera.

Surveillance footage shows the 72-year-old stepping out of the house at 11:08 a.m., dressed sharply in khakis and a checkered shirt. About 30 minutes later, he was seen walking into a nearby gas station and then disappearing from sight. His family, stunned and concerned, watched the footage repeatedly, searching for clues to his sudden disappearance.

Seven weeks later, no trace of Waithaka has been found. Authorities have conducted extensive searches in the surrounding wooded areas using helicopters, drones, search dogs, and infrared technology, but have come up empty-handed.

The family’s questions deepen considering Waithaka’s health history. His daughter suspects he may have had undiagnosed dementia, which could explain his sudden disorientation and wandering in unfamiliar territory. His family fears he may have become lost or fallen asleep in the heat, never to wake again.

Byron Barua graduated on May 20 without his grandfather in attendance. At right is his father, Willington Barua.

His departure was preceded by signs of agitation during his international flight—becoming incoherent and falling after trying to use the airport escalator. After a brief hospital stay, he seemed to settle briefly before stepping outside, only to vanish.

The investigation suggests he may have accepted rides from strangers, making tracking more complex. His last confirmed sighting was at a gas station, with sources suspecting he may have entered nearby woods or accepted a ride elsewhere. Local residents are actively helping search efforts, distributing flyers and exploring the area.

Despite efforts, Waithaka’s phone last pinged in Frankfurt, hinting it might be turned off or in airplane mode. His family remains hopeful but devastated—struggling to understand how their beloved father and grandfather disappeared without a trace.
