California Professor Arrested for Tossing Tear Gas at ICE Agents During Marijuana Farm Raid

Professor Arrested During Raid at California Cannabis Farm

A professor from California was detained after reportedly throwing a tear gas canister at law enforcement officers during a raid targeting a marijuana farm accused of child labor violations.

Jonathan Anthony Caravello, a faculty member specializing in mathematics and philosophy at California State University Channel Islands, was taken into custody by federal agents at Glass House Farms in Ventura County. The arrest followed a violent confrontation during the operation.

According to authorities, Caravello was charged with violating federal law by assaulting law enforcement officers, specifically under 18 USC 111, which penalizes resisting or impeding officers. Federal officials clarified that he was not kidnapped but was actively participating in protests outside the farm.

The California Faculty Association reported that protesters claimed Caravello was forcibly taken by masked agents without warning or identification. Meanwhile, criminal documents revealed he was observed using a megaphone to amplify siren sounds amidst the chaos, and later attempting to interfere with the raid.

During the scene, protestors threw rocks and caused damage to government vehicles. Federal agents responded by deploying tear gas, and Caravello was caught on camera allegedly attempting to kick a canister before throwing it back at officers, narrowly missing them. Witnesses stated the canister was hurled several feet above law enforcement heads.

After leaving the scene, Caravello reportedly returned hours later in different clothing. He was detained just before 6 p.m. as officers tried to arrest him. Despite resisting arrest, he was eventually released on bail after posting $15,000.

The operation at Glass House Farms, part of a crackdown on illegal labor practices, resulted in the arrest of over 350 undocumented workers at multiple sites. Authorities announced the rescue of at least 14 migrant children and the arrest of individuals involved in violent disruptions.

In response, Glass House Brands denied any involvement in hiring minors or violating labor laws, asserting compliance with warrants and lawful hiring practices.
