Trump Faces Backlash After Grabbing Club World Cup Medal & Keeping Trophy in Oval Office

U.S. President Donald Trump Surprises During Chelsea’s Club World Cup Win

New footage reveals President Donald Trump receiving a winners’ medal from FIFA president Gianni Infantino before joining Chelsea in the trophy celebration for the Club World Cup. Trump was seen among the players, including captain Reece James, during the victorious moment after Chelsea’s 3-0 final victory over Paris Saint-Germain.

Chelsea star Cole Palmer was the standout player, scoring twice and assisting Joao Pedro for the third goal, showcasing a dominant performance in the final.

During the ceremony, Trump was handed a medal, which he kept hold of throughout the celebration. Interestingly, he later claimed he would retain the actual trophy, with Chelsea receiving a replica, as typically only the club’s representatives take home the original.

In comments, Trump praised FIFA, saying, “FIFA is doing fantastically well for football in America, it’s a growing sport.” He recounted a meeting with Infantino, who jokingly suggested they leave the trophy in the Oval Office, which Trump appeared to do, claiming the real trophy would stay there.

While Chelsea generally receive a replica for celebrations, Trump’s continued presence during the trophy lift was unusual. Infantino attempted to step in and move Trump away, but the U.S. president remained on stage, alongside James and goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga. Chelsea players appeared confused, with Palmer asking, “What’s he doing?”

Palmer later reflected, “I knew he would be here but didn’t expect him to stay during the trophy lift, so I was a bit confused.” Video analysis revealed that Trump told Palmer, “I’m a big fan of you,” after presenting him with the tournament’s best player award.

Further footage shows Trump engaging with Chelsea players and attempting to interact during the celebration, with goalkeepers and captains seeking his approval before lifting the trophy together.
