Mass. Fire Chiefs Blame Mayor for Budget Cuts After Nursing Home Fire Toll Rises

Fire in Fall River Claims Nine Lives Amid Staffing Shortages

An intense fire at a long-standing assisted living facility in Fall River, Massachusetts, resulted in the tragic deaths of nine residents. The local fire department responded with approximately 50 firefighters, but many were off-duty due to staffing deficiencies, which critics say hampered rescue efforts.

Union officials attributed the tragedy to a history of budget cuts and the closure of fire stations over the years, which they believe contributed to the overall insufficient staffing. The city’s fire department currently operates with ten fire companies, of which only two meet the recommended staffing standard of four firefighters per shift.

On the night of the fire, around 70 residents were inside the 26-year-old Gabriel House facility when smoke and flames spread rapidly. One resident, Lorraine Ferrara, recounted her harrowing experience of waking to the smell of smoke and rushing to escape. A firefighter broke her window and rescued her from the building, amid fears she thought she wouldn’t survive.

While residents praised the quick response of emergency crews, some expressed frustrations with staff members’ perceived lack of proactive assistance during the chaos. Resident Robert Cabral criticized staff for allegedly not knocking on doors to alert residents.

Authorities reported that five firefighters were injured during the rescue and later released from the hospital. The Fire Chief described the incident as an unimaginable tragedy for the victims’ families and the community.

Owners of the Gabriel House facility, which opened in 1999 and offers senior housing options, are cooperating with a comprehensive investigation to determine the cause. The facility’s owner declined to comment but emphasized the ongoing inquiry. The incident has sparked renewed concerns about staffing levels and fire safety regulations in vulnerable elderly care settings.
