LA Mayor Karen Bass Signs Order for Cash Payments to Immigrant ICE Raid Victims

LA Mayor Implements Measures to Protect Immigrant Communities Amid Federal Raids

The mayor of Los Angeles has signed an executive order aimed at strengthening protocols and support for immigrant neighborhoods, including the distribution of cash assistance, in response to recent federal immigration enforcement operations.

This order seeks to shield local residents and the city’s workforce from the unpredictability of federal raids. It mandates that federal agencies disclose details about their operations — such as detention numbers, reasons for detention, and costs — through a formal FOIA request.

“I needed an executive directive to help our city understand how to defend itself against federal actions,” the mayor stated. She emphasized that the order will guide city departments on how to respond if approached by immigration officials and ensure compliance with Los Angeles’ sanctuary city policies.

Additionally, city agencies will develop training and protocols for handling immigration enforcement. The mayor also announced plans to provide financial aid to those impacted by these raids, with cash cards of a few hundred dollars to be distributed by immigrant rights groups within a week. This aid will be funded not by city money but through philanthropic partners.

The mayor introduced new measures to support immigrant communities affected by federal enforcement actions.

Further, the recent surge in enforcement actions, including a raid on a cannabis farm in Ventura County where ten minors, eight unaccompanied, were found working illegally, has sparked city-led lawsuits against federal operations they deem unlawful.

In another notable incident, nearly 100 National Guard troops and immigration officers targeted MacArthur Park, prompting the mayor to intervene and demand a moratorium on the operation, which was dismissed by a Border Patrol official.

The recent enforcement actions have led to heightened tensions and public protests in Los Angeles.

The mayor’s new policies aim to safeguard the community, while critics and officials continue to debate the scope and necessity of federal immigration enforcement within local jurisdictions.
