Why Paul Simon Didn’t Speak to Art Garfunkel for Decades
The Rise and Fall of Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel
The story of Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel is one of the most famous yet complex duos in music history. Childhood friends in Queens, New York, their harmonious voices captivated audiences in the 1960s, making them a symbol of folk-rock excellence. Despite their musical success, their relationship was marred by betrayal, rivalry, and eventual estrangement.
Paul Simon was born in 1941 in Newark, New Jersey, to Hungarian Jewish parents. Growing up immersed in music and tradition, he moved to Queens at age four. There, he first saw Art Garfunkel perform at a school talent show in 1953, sparking their lifelong partnership. By 15, under the stage names Tom and Jerry, they recorded “Hey Schoolgirl,” reaching the Billboard charts.
However, tensions emerged early. Simon’s ambition to pursue a solo career led him to secretly record tunes and produce other artists, which hurt Garfunkel deeply. Their initial breakup in 1958 was quiet but significant, with Simon experiencing modest solo success while Garfunkel struggled without him.
The duo reunited in 1963, releasing their debut album, Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M., which flopped commercially. A turning point came when producer Tom Wilson added electric instruments to “The Sound of Silence,” transforming it into a hit, catapulting them into stardom. Albums like Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme and Bookends followed.
As their fame grew, so did their conflicts. Simon took control of their music, feeling overshadowed by Garfunkel’s image, leading to resentment. The recording of Bridge Over Troubled Water in 1970 marked the end of their collaboration, as creative differences and personal issues overshadowed their partnership.
Post-split, Simon enjoyed a critically acclaimed solo career. Yet, personal struggles, including a brief marriage to Carrie Fisher, controversy over recording in apartheid-era South Africa, and health issues, marked his life. Despite attempts to reunite, their relationship remained fractured, culminating in a bitter public fallout by 2015.
Their silence persisted until a chance encounter brought a tentative reunion. Today, their music endures — a testament to both their collaborative genius and the human complexities behind their legendary partnership.
