Ultrarunner Dies After Collapsing in 102-Mile Hardrock Endurance Run

Experienced ultrarunner dies during Colorado’s grueling race

An accomplished ultrarunner from Michigan tragically passed away after collapsing during a demanding 102-mile trail race through Colorado’s steep mountain passes on Friday.

Elaine Stypula, 60, fell early into the Hardrock Hundred Mile Endurance Run in Silverton, approximately three hours after the start. Emergency responders located her along the Little Giant Trail near Gold Lake, a remote and rugged section of the course. Due to the challenging terrain, rescuers could only reach her vehicle within a quarter mile before needing to continue on foot.

Despite efforts to resuscitate her, Stypula was pronounced dead at 10:27 a.m. Her official cause of death has not been disclosed. She was known for her extensive racing career and outdoor pursuits, with a record of completing various marathons and mountain climbs, including Mont Blanc and Mount Rainier.

The Hardrock Endurance Run is a two-day event traversing scenic locations such as Lake City, Ouray, Telluride, and Ophir, before returning to Silverton. Participants follow a clockwise route crossing 13 major passes exceeding 12,000 feet in elevation, with the highest point atop Handies Peak at 14,048 feet. The race typically takes runners about 40 hours to complete.

The cause of Stypula’s collapse remains under investigation, with high elevation possibly contributing. Her background includes participation in several notable races, including the Transalpine Run, Paris Marathon, and Brooklyn Marathon. She also scaled some of the world’s highest peaks, reflecting her dedication to endurance sports.

Her death has deeply impacted the race community, with organizers expressing condolences and emphasizing their commitment to the safety and well-being of all involved. Stypula was also a family attorney by profession and was recognized for her passion and resilience in ultrarunning circles.
