Reem Acra Wins $38M After Fire Destroys Dresses

Reem Acra Wins $38.7 Million Judgment Over Fire Damage to Dresses

Renowned NYC bridal designer Reem Acra, popular among celebrities like Taylor Swift, was awarded a $38.7 million court judgment nearly eleven years after a fire caused extensive damage to her Midtown studio. The fire resulted in the loss of over 2,000 dresses, along with significant work-in-progress, historic patterns, and high-end accessories.

The blaze filled Acra’s seventh-floor workspace with heavy smoke and soot, rendering the fabric and dresses irreparably destroyed, according to court testimony. The damage extended beyond dresses to include handcrafted shoes, intricate embroidery, vintage garments, and thousands of yards of specialty fabric.

The legal ruling mandates a troubled real estate developer, the Chetrit Group, to settle the amount in June, following nearly a decade of litigation. Despite the verdict, the Chetrit Group, led by Joseph Chetrit, has reportedly ignored the court’s order, citing financial pressures from creditors and ongoing foreclosure proceedings.

Acra’s luxurious bridal gowns, which can range from $2,500 to $110,000, have been worn by many prominent figures, including First Ladies Melania Trump and Jill Biden, and celebrities like Beyonce and Olivia Wilde. Swift herself is a fan of Acra’s designs, having worn her dresses for album covers and events.
