Bill Gates Loses $51B in Days
Bill Gates Donates a Large Portion of His Wealth
Bill Gates is heavily increasing his charitable contributions, leading to a significant decrease in his net worth. According to the Bloomberg Billionaire Index, his fortune has dropped by approximately $51 billion over a few days, reducing his total wealth to around $124 billion.
This decline has moved Gates from being the world’s richest man to the 12th position. As of July 3, he had approximately $175 billion, and his focus on philanthropy underscores his commitment to giving back. Notably, Gates has expressed a desire to give away 99% of his wealth within the next two decades, intending to close the Gates Foundation by the end of 2045.
He has stated that he wants to ensure he does not die wealthy, citing urgent global problems that require resources. His motivation stems from witnessing the impact of his foundation’s work, which distributes vaccines for treatable diseases like diarrhea and pneumonia that still claim many lives in the developing world. Additionally, the slowing of progress due to declines in foreign aid from Western nations has influenced his decision.
Despite his fortune shrinking further to an estimated $123 billion, Gates remains steadfast in his plan to donate the majority of his wealth. He and his ex-wife Melinda established their Gates Foundation in 2000, which has since donated over $100 billion to various global health and development initiatives, aiming to continue its efforts long after their lifetimes.
