Seinfeld Writer: Kanye West Was ‘Sweet’ Before Kardashians

Comedian Larry Charles Reflects on Meeting Kanye West Before His Public Downward Spiral

Larry Charles, a veteran comedy writer known for works such as Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm, shares his memories of Kanye West from around 2008, prior to West’s many controversial behaviors. Charles describes West at that time as a friendly, witty, and self-aware individual who was quite relaxed—long before his marriage to Kim Kardashian.

Charles recounts that West approached him with humor and charm, and they even collaborated on a TV project based loosely on West’s life, set to air on HBO. The show, which included J.B. Smoove among the cast, was intended to portray West’s life as a comedic horror story. Charles recalls: “Everyone got along well, and West was a pleasure to work with, even becoming a friend. I often wonder what could have been if the project had gone ahead.”

In their collaboration, West reportedly nicknamed himself “the Black Larry David,” highlighting his comedic aspirations. He also confided in Charles that he frequently found himself needing to apologize for things he said, describing himself as the “Black Larry David” and comparing his life to a series of missteps and humorous mishaps.

Charles emphasizes that Kanye’s life could be viewed as “a hilarious horror story,” and reflects on how minor life choices can have profound consequences. He acknowledges signs of mental health issues in West’s recent troubling conduct, including wearing a KKK robe, praising Hitler, and publicly paying women to wear revealing outfits.

Despite widespread criticism, Charles expressed sympathy for West, describing him as a “golden goose” who is often exploited in Hollywood. “Nobody steps in to help them, they are just used because of the profits they generate,” he notes.

In his memoir, Comedy Samurai: Forty Years of Blood, Guts, and Laughter, Larry Charles details his experiences working with other high-profile figures like Nicolas Cage, Bob Dylan, Sacha Baron Cohen, and Russell Brand, providing insights into the world behind the glitz and the complex personalities within it.
