Mikel Names Chelsea Player to Replace This Summer — Blues Won’t Win Trophies Next Season With Him

John Obi Mikel Criticizes Chelsea’s Goalkeeper Situation and Calls for Reinforcements

Retired Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has expressed strong opinions about the club’s need for a high-caliber goalkeeper to compete effectively for trophies next season. He emphasized that without addressing this key area, Chelsea’s ambitions will remain limited.

After achieving European success and securing a Champions League spot under new manager Enzo Maresca, Chelsea is actively strengthening its squad. New signings like Liam Delap, Joao Pedro, and Jamie Gittens are set to bolster the attacking options for the upcoming campaign.

However, Mikel pointed out that the club’s defensive backbone, particularly the goalkeeper position, requires urgent attention. Last season, both Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen failed to inspire confidence, prompting the club to seek a new first-choice goalkeeper.

“A lot of Chelsea fans agree that we need another top goalkeeper because Sanchez isn’t cutting it,” Mikel said. “We can’t go into the new season with him; he’s not the goalkeeper who will help us win trophies.”

He further critiqued the goalkeeper’s performance during the Club World Cup in the USA, where Maresca chose Sanchez between the sticks. While Sanchez made some errors, Chelsea managed to win matches, but Mikel believes that in the longer and more demanding season ahead, a top-class goalkeeper is essential.

“In the Premier League, Champions League, and FA Cup, you need a world-class keeper. Teams like Liverpool and Arsenal have top goalkeepers, and this area must be improved,” Mikel added.

Former Chelsea player John Obi Mikel insists the club must invest in a new goalkeeper this summer.

Chelsea has already signed Mike Penders from Genk for around £17 million. The club has also been linked with high-profile goalkeepers such as Gianluigi Donnarumma of PSG and AC Milan’s Mike Maignan. Donnarumma has stated his preference to stay at PSG, while Maignan was previously considered but negotiations did not materialize.

Mikel’s stance underscores the importance of bolstering the goalkeeper position to boost the team’s chances of winning major trophies next season.
