Judge Releases Letter from Would-Be Trump Assassin Offering Himself for Prisoner Swap

Alleged Plot to Assassinate Trump and Bizarre Prison Letter

A man accused of attempting to kill former President Donald Trump during a golf outing last September has made strange demands in a recent court letter. Ryan Routh, currently imprisoned in Miami, pleaded with a federal judge for a prisoner swap, expressing a desire to “freeze to death in Siberia” as part of a negotiated exchange with Russia. He also proposed offering himself to Hamas and other adversaries of the United States.

Routh, 59, admitted in a June 29 letter that he had previously requested a prisoner swap but received no response. In his plea, he questioned why the death penalty was not an option, lamenting his life of “nothingness,” and questioned the morality of the justice system. He suggested that trading him to countries like China, Iran, or North Korea could serve as a diplomatic victory, especially if it involved exchanging for an American prisoner.

He also announced his decision to represent himself in court, criticizing his legal counsel. Routh claimed that his lawyers did not genuinely support his case, alleging they were more interested in selling his story to his daughter and accused them of trying to shame him with negative character assessments. He expressed a wish to “walk alone” and questioned the importance of morality if one does not have character.

Judge Aileen Cannon released the court letter
Judge Aileen Cannon, who presides over the case, released Routh’s unusual letter in June.

Routh faces charges that could lead to life imprisonment if convicted. Prosecutors stated he meticulously planned the attack over weeks. He reportedly hid in bushes outside Trump’s Florida golf course with a rifle, intending to shoot the then-presidential candidate. Before Trump appeared, a Secret Service agent spotted Routh, who then aimed his rifle at the agent. The agent responded with gunfire, causing Routh to drop his weapon and flee before firing any shots.

Witnesses assisted law enforcement, with one fleeing the scene and being arrested after being tracked by police helicopter. The authorities confirmed that Routh was the individual seen fleeing. His case continues as he awaits trial on charges related to the assassination attempt.
