Hochul Defends Handling of Harassment and Toxic Workplace Complaints
State Governor Defends Handling of Harassment Complaints
Governor Kathy Hochul has defended her office’s response to allegations of workplace misconduct and sexual harassment involving her former press secretary, Avi Small, emphasizing that the system worked to address the issues.
Small served as Hochul’s press secretary since 2022 but resigned last week following an investigation into an incident in which he allegedly inappropriately touched a staff member at an Albany bar after a work event. He had previously faced a similar complaint in 2024 when it was alleged he cornered a staffer in a closet, yet he was allowed to keep his position after an outside review.
Hochul argued that her administration has made significant progress in changing workplace culture, stating, “The system worked,” and she expects more recognition of her efforts compared to past practices in Albany. She further stated she is proud of how her office has handled these issues.
Since taking office in 2021 after Governor Andrew Cuomo’s resignation amid sexual harassment scandals, Hochul has pledged to maintain a toxic-workplace-free environment. Her leadership has been closely scrutinized following these recent allegations.
Hochul declined to comment on the specifics of the complaints against Small. His role included traveling frequently with the governor and being a close confidant during her administration.
