Sporting President Promises Disciplinary Action as Viktor Gyokeres Goes on Strike amid £70m Arsenal Interest

Frederico Varandas, president of Sporting Clube, has announced that Viktor Gyokeres will face disciplinary measures after failing to report for pre-season training amidst strong interest from Arsenal.

The 27-year-old striker did not show up this week despite the club granting him an extended break until July 12. Sporting’s patience has now worn thin, with Varandas indicating that Gyokeres will be fined heavily.

Gyokeres is believed to have agreed on pre-contract terms with Arsenal, but the transfer has been stalled over Sporting’s solid £69 million valuation. The Portuguese club remains firm despite the high offer.

Varandas stated, “Everything can be resolved by the market closing, a hefty fine, and an apology from the player.” He emphasized the club’s stance on prioritizing its interests and dismissing any pressure to facilitate the transfer.

The Swedish striker scored an impressive 54 goals last season for Sporting across all competitions and is considered one of Europe’s most prolific forwards. Since transferring from Coventry City in 2023 for £20 million, Gyokeres has netted 97 goals in 102 appearances.

Although contracted for three more years, it seems unlikely Gyokeres will see out his agreement, given his desire to rejoin the Premier League, where he previously expressed ambitions to return and showcase his talents.

Gyokeres has spoken about his aspiration to return to England’s top tier, describing it as “one of the biggest leagues in Europe” and viewing his period at Brighton as unfulfilled, seeking “great revenge” by playing there again.

Despite Arsenal’s keen interest and the club’s efforts to strengthen their squad before a planned tour of Asia, Sporting appears to be holding firm, ready to keep the Gunners waiting until the transfer window closes.
