Barcelona Unveils ‘Messi Plans’ for Nou Camp Reopening in 2026 After £1.3B Renovation

Barcelona Plans Grand Reopening of Nou Camp with Special Celebration for Lionel Messi in 2026

The football club is organizing a major ceremony to celebrate the reopening of the iconic Nou Camp stadium, with former star Lionel Messi expected to play a central role in the event.

Due to extensive renovations costing over £1.3 billion, Barcelona has been playing their home matches away from the stadium since the end of the 2022-23 season. The upgrades include the addition of a third tier, a dual VIP ring, and a new roof, all aimed at making the stadium the largest sports venue in Europe with a capacity of 105,000 seats once completed.

The renovation works, which began in 2023, are scheduled for completion next year. During this period, the team has been hosting matches approximately three miles away at the Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys.

Barcelona is preparing to return to the Nou Camp for the annual Joan Gamper Trophy match next month, with festivities planned for the full reopening once all construction is finished. The club’s management aims to feature Messi prominently in the ceremonial ceremonies, along with other club legends, to mark the historic occasion.

While plans are in motion, no official contact has been made with Messi regarding his participation. The Argentine superstar has not been in touch with the club’s president since his departure in 2021. After leaving Barcelona, Messi spent two seasons at PSG before transferring to Inter Miami in Major League Soccer in 2023.

Part of the excitement is the hope that, should the roof installation be completed by next summer, the reopening ceremony could occur during the 2026-27 season. The club is eager to make Messi’s return a highlight of their spectacular new stadium but remains cautious, noting that negotiations are still ongoing.
