Gene Hackman’s $80M Estate Sued Over 5-Figure Credit Card Debt After His D:ea:th

Gene Hackman’s Estate Faces Debts After His Death

Following the untimely passing of actor Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy Arakawa earlier this year, their estates were found to have unresolved debts. Hackman, who was discovered dead at age 95 along with Arakawa and one of their dogs, owed Citibank approximately $98,345 on a credit card, according to court documents. Arakawa owed a smaller sum to Bank of America, totaling roughly $4,330.

It is believed that since Hackman and Arakawa died without settling these debts, the banks filed claims to recover the outstanding amounts. The couple was found deceased in their New Mexico home after their bodies remained unclaimed for several days, with Arakawa’s body showing signs of decomposition and mummification.

Despite the debts, Hackman reportedly left behind an estate valued at around $80 million, which suggests that the outstanding obligations are likely to be addressed or resolved through his estate. Their deaths had remained a mystery for days until they were discovered by a maintenance worker.

Arakawa passed away first from hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, a rare virus transmitted by rodents. Hackman, who had been battling Alzheimer’s disease, succumbed days later from complications related to his mental and cardiac health.

The will, last updated in 2005, named Arakawa as Hackman’s estate successor trustee. However, she predeceased him, raising questions about the fate of his assets. His three adult children—Christopher Allen, Elizabeth Jean, and Leslie Anne Hackman—have not been explicitly named beneficiaries in the original will, leading to ongoing legal disputes.

Meanwhile, the actor’s heirs reportedly expressed grief over his death, though reports suggest they had a distant relationship with their father. The estate and succession issues are now subject to legal proceedings, with authorities and lawyers involved to clarify the distribution of Hackman’s fortune.
