Diogo Jota’s Wife Visits Anfield as Liverpool Retires No. 20 Shirt

Tributes Pour in for Diogo Jota and His Brother Following Tragic Accident

Rute Cardoso, wife of Liverpool footballer Diogo Jota, received a wave of heartfelt condolences as she visited Anfield to pay respects after her husband’s and his brother Andre’s untimely deaths. She was joined by friends and family, laying flowers amidst the many messages and floral tributes left by supporters.

Jota, 28, and his 25-year-old brother lost their lives in the early hours of last Thursday when a tyre burst on their car while overtaking on the A-52 motorway in Zamora, northern Spain. The tragic incident occurred only 11 days after Jota married his childhood sweetheart, Rute Cardoso, who is the mother of their children: sons Dinis (4) and Duarte (2), and a baby daughter Mafalda, aged just eight months.

In honor of the players, Liverpool announced the unprecedented decision to retire the Number 20 jersey across all their teams to commemorate Jota’s memory. Several Liverpool players, including Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, and Darwin Nunez, traveled to Jota’s hometown in Portugal for his funeral on Saturday. Teammates Luis Diaz and Alisson Becker attended a Requiem Mass on Wednesday, paying tribute to both Jota and his brother.

On Friday, the team visited Anfield to see the tributes, with fans and players in black armbands observing a minute of silence. Flowers and messages from supporters continue to adorn the stadium, and a mural on Sybil Road now bears heartfelt messages, including the words “Forever 20.”

The club’s first pre-season friendly against Preston North End will include tributes, such as a wreath-laying ceremony, a moment of silence, and digital tributes displayed on screens. The match is scheduled for Sunday at Deepdale, with fans able to watch the proceedings on ITV. A special edition of the matchday programme will feature tributes to both Jota and Silva, honoring their lives and impact on the football community.
